Press release: The “big mistake” businesses make when cutting costs

23/4/2017

Picture

When business budgets are limited, "extra" services such as PR and marketing are often the first to be cut.

But that's a big mistake which some SMEs make said Colette Lowe of Chew PR.
"When there's a down-turn, that's exactly when you need to invest in a good strategy for your business with PR and marketing being a huge part of that."

Mrs Lowe has joined up with fellow industry expert and trainer Michelle Poole, from Ossett, to offer businesses and individuals a smart way to invest in PR and marketing.
Mrs Poole, who runs Practical Business Training which prides itself in providing hands-on training, said: "We are offering people a cost-effective PR and Marketing solution all in one day.

"We will be teaching businesses and individuals the tricks of the trade and helping them to develop a PR and Marketing strategy which they can implement themselves.
“As always our guests on the day won't just absorb information but they'll do and plan some of the work we talk about."

Attendees will create their own Distribution List, and draft their first story.
They will also create their own Marketing Plan and a plan to dedicate time to deliver it.
Mrs Poole said: "They'll be in good hands too because Chew PR has managed the PR and marketing for some big businesses such as the Shackletons which helped them to achieve a 50 per cent increase in their profit.

"Our PR and Marketing course is very popular and dedicating a day on these two items will seriously impact your action."

The next course is on Wednesday April 26 at 9.30am until 4pm at Langham House, Westgate, Wakefield WF2 9SR, costing £150. To book, go to: practicalbusinesstraining.co.uk

NOTES TO EDITORS:
Why blogging is big business

Blogging means big business for companies and consumers, with a rising tide of businesses utilising vlogs and blogs.

Why? Well IT trainer and blogging coach Michelle Poole, said: "Brands and PR companies are now approaching bloggers rather than just the traditional media because they want voices that relate to their customers.

"So blogs which fit the niche market they want to target can be a great way of advertising.
"It's not just about the size of a blogs audience, it's also about how engaged their audience is and who their audience is."

These so-called online influencers don't all run traditional blogs either.
As Mrs Poole explains: "Some are micro-bloggers which means they may use just one social media platform to share their story.
"For example Instagram is great for fashion, food and beauty photos whilst twitter can be good for news and short text base stories."
But most bloggers tend to use a range of platforms.
Family, health and life blogger Sophie Mei Lan at MamaMei.co.uk agrees.
She said: "I love each platform for its uniqueness.
"You have to treat them all differently.
"I tend to use Wordpress for my blog posts and then YouTube for my longer form videos.
“Then facebook is my greatest referrer through live video content, photos and sharing other people’s blogs too.”

About Michelle Poole, Practical Business Training:
After 6 years running my VA business and training any number of people, including VAs, both in my business and ‘other’ lives I’ve found that I just love training.
I love going on training too – over the years I have not stopped learning and am drawn to all manner of training – be it free, online, face to face, mega bucks or just talks at networking events.

However, I hate training courses where I leave buzzing with enthusiasm, a brain that is coming up with multiple ideas and a passion for the learning – because I know that when I leave the training, armed with lots of notes, handouts, workbooks, etc I return to a desk or an inbox that is bursting with work to begin/continue.

All that hard work and time taken to learn has been wasted because I won’t be able to get straight on with it, and when I finally do – I’ve forgotten what to do, how it works and what were all those hidden gems that I missed!

My training is differentYou will take action, you will complete work, time is built in to actually write a PR piece, collate a distribution list, start a blog, create a 3-month calendar – and that’s just the first two courses I have developed (PR & Marketing and All Things Blogging).
Here at Practical Business Training we are giving you the tools, training and TIME to work ON your business marketing – because we all know how important it is. When you leave with your plan you can continue the action – or outsource if it just becomes too much. I’m a great believer in getting help (if you need help check out my VA business as they can certainly help you).

More about All Things Blogging:

Fact file on the course:
Spend a day learning about the top thing that will get you more clients. Create a blogging calendar and have blogs ready to publish. Learn what the best images are for your business and where to find them and ensure no one else uses them.
You will leave the course with:

  • A variety of blogging ideas and where to find content
  • A Blogging Calendar
  • A Blogging Template
  • Knowing how an image can enhance your blog and where to get them
  • Knowing where to share your blog and how often
  • A comprehensive list of Types of Blogs
  • Your very first blog (or maybe two)
  • Knowing how to repurpose your blog to get maximum exposure
  • A list of Tweets to promote your blog

Best Wishes,

MasterChef: How one contestant's life changed in a year

29/3/2017

Picture

It's been a year since MasterChef contestant Chris Hale graced our screens with his outlandish food and banter.

And as the plates are getting heated again for a new series of the show, Mr Hale describes what life has been like since making it to the quarter-finals of the popular BBC cooking contest.
"I really enjoyed the challenge of being on the show.
"I love cooking and creating recipes so having a platform to showcase these on was phenomenal."

And Mr Hale's creations were well received with his Indian Sushi going viral online as well as his chocolate soil dessert proving popular amongst foodies nationwide.
The father-of-two said: "It was a whirlwind being on the show and one of the best experiences of my life.
"It's always hard being knocked out as you can't help but want to learn more, keep cooking and win.

"But the experience was so positive and it inspired me to do more with my cooking."
Mr Hale, 30, from Sandal in Wakefield, made the most of his TV fame and immersed himself into the catering world, working freelance as a chef across Europe.
Not one to rest on his laurels, the trained sports scientist and altitude trainer, also collaborated with fellow MasterChef contestants.

Mr Hale said: "A few of us from the show kept in touch, so I arranged for us to take over a few restaurants together, creating our own menu.
"And they helped to cater for my wedding last summer at Unity Works."
Business quickly boomed for the Yorkshire-based entrepreneur and he set up his company Pop Up North.

He said: "At Pop Up North we provide pop up restaurants, private dining, buffets and events catering all with a fine dining twist.
"I've also been invited to host cookery demos, private workshops and judge cooking contests.

"I've gone from being a self-taught home cook to now judging trained professional chefs, it's pretty amazing really.
"What an incredible year for my family and I.
"And this coming year is set to be even better and busier."
Mr Hale is also looking forward to blogging at mamamei.co.uk (his wife's family, food and health blog) about the new series which starts tonight.

He said: "It's daunting being a contestant on reality TV but with hard work and determination it can be a great way to showcase your skills to millions of people.
"Although I am glad this year to just relax and enjoy the show from the comfort of my own home with my family."

MasterChef is back tonight, BBC One, 8pm.
For more on Mr Hale and Pop Up North, go to: Pop-upnorth.co.uk
Follow him and his reactions on the new show live on twitter @AllHaleChris and Facebook.com/popupnorthfood

One of Chris Hale's DIY 'dinner at home' recipes:

Chickpea, tomato & spinach curry (serves 2)
Ingredients:
1 onion - 2 garlic cloves, chopped
3cm/1¼ in piece ginger - 3 ripe tomatoes
1 tsp ground cumin - 2 tsp ground coriander
1 head of broccoli - 400g can chickpeas, drained
200g spinach leaves - 1 lemon
1 tin chopped tomatoes - 100g rice

Method (prep):
Put the onion, garlic, ginger and tomatoes in a food processor or blender and whizz to a purée.
Heat oil in a large pan. Add the spices, fry for a few secs and add purée. Bubble together for 2 mins, then add the chopped tomatoes and broccoli and cook for 4 mins. Stir in chickpeas and spinach, squeeze over lemon.
Cook the rice according to the packet instructions.

Notes to editor
Ribbon of Hearts bio:

Where it all began...
Ribbon of Hearts came from little thoughts that were written down and kept, together with flashes of inspiration and it was all brought to fruition. Working from home was a dream, to do something I enjoyed and to love what I do. My family was my main focus and to be able to spend more time with them especially on a weekend, this was a real pull. I have a friend who inspired me more than anything in the world to do this, she is someone who showed determination, courage and strength to live each day and to be positive in life.
Ribbon of Hearts was born.

Wakefield Mumbler is an online one-stop-shop for parents

A family focused business network has launched in the city to help SME's reach their target market.
Wakefield Mumbler is an online community which supports families by providing relevant local information for free. At its core Mumbler is about supporting local families and bringing together parents and carers from across the district in the hope of creating a sense of community for families in Wakefield and a safe place to discuss all things about family-life.
Founder of Wakefield Mumbler, Heather Sweeney said:

"I'm so excited to launch the Mumbler website and community in Wakefield.
"As a mum myself I know the daily challenges that parents face plus the added juggle of running a business.
"So I'm really passionate about making wakefield.mumbler.co.uk a place where families can easily access the local information they need and to find a welcoming platform where they are free to ask for recommendations for groups, services, advice for family problems, ideas for days out and everything else in between.
"In turn supporting the local economy and showcasing the best businesses in the city.
"I hope Mumbler will take the stress out of family life for others in Wakefield, as it did for me as a new mum in Harrogate."

The social media savvy mum-of-one who is from Barnsley also works part-time as a teacher as well as running her new Mumbler business, which is already proving popular.
She said: "I'm so pleased with how quickly Mumbler is growing.
"I'm getting lots of great feedback and I hope every parent in the city will join us no matter what your situation."

As part of Wakefield Mumbler Mrs Sweeney launched the business network group for businesses that are suited to a family market.
"I meet so many parents that have set up their own businesses or become franchisees in the hope of finding a way to balance family life with work. I created the business network to help support other parents like me."

NOTES TO EDITORS:
Factfile about Wakefield Mumbler:

- Wakefield MUMbler is owned and run by local mum Heather Sweeney.
- Heather was born in Barnsley and brought up in Knaresborough. As a new mum, living in Harrogate she used the Harrogate MUMbler site to survive her first year as a parent.
- Recently moving back to Wakefield to be closer to her family, she soon missed the MUMbler website, not knowing many people, finding it difficult to connect with other local parents and struggling to find great places to visit as a family.
- She realised that there was a real need for a MUMbler in Wakefield, so she started the process of buying into the MUMbler family and became a franchisee in August 2016.
- By September 2016 the Wakefield MUMbler News Page and Chat Group on Facebook were lauched to help connect with local parents and carers. - - In October Heather also set up the Walefield MUMbler Business Network Group on Facebook to connect with other local parenting and child related businesses.
- The website launched in December 2016, following months of research and content creation.

More about Heather Sweeney of Wakefield Mumbler:

Heather is also a part-time teacher, so when she isn’t marking and planning she spends much of her free time glued to her iPhone, shamelessly overusing social media and desperately trying to be a good mum too! Running the mumbler site does lead to some exciting family adventures, which make up for the time spent in the office. Heather, her husband and their mini Mumbler can often be seen handing out flyers sporting a purple Wakefield MUMbler hoodie. "I couldn't do this without the support of my husband when he isn’t working in Harrogate, keeping on top of the housework and being an awesome dad he's helping me with Mumbler- we're a team!"

How Mumbler began:

Mumbler Ltd is owned by Harrogate mum of two Sally Haslewood, and has been her third ‘baby’ since launching the website in November 2012.

Familiar with the town, but unfamiliar with it’s parenting community Sally saw a gap in the market and Mumbler was born. Initially as a Facebook chat group in 2011 it’s popularity rapidly grew and saw the launch of the Harrogate Mumbler website in 2012, the first Mumbler Awards in 2013 and the first franchised site in Hull in 2014.

Mumbler is now available as the ultimate local parenting on-line community other locations including York, Leeds, Hull & East Riding, Doncaster, Ripon & Nidderdale, Stockport, and Stratford upon Avon, with several other sites due to launch in coming months.

How redundancy can be a blessing in disguise

How redundancy can be “a blessing disguise”

A top marketing director who was made redundant after 20 years in industry, said that it was a "blessing in disguise."

Marketeer Richard Michie, from Gleadless, Sheffield, said that his redundancy became a launch pad for his own marketing business which is now celebrating its first birthday.
Mr Michie who runs the Marketing Optimist, said: "Whilst redundancy can be daunting, it can also be a brilliant opportunity to achieve your dreams.
"I’d always wanted to run my own business, but the timing was never right. I wanted to control my own destiny and spend more time with my family, so using my marketing skills to help other businesses grow made a lot of sense."

And the father-of-five has had astronomical success in the past year, working with over 35 businesses to provide them with "the marketing department they don't have."
Mr Michie puts his success down to finding a gap in the market.

He said: "SME businesses know that they need marketing to generate sales but they just don’t have the time or knowledge to do it themselves, they’re too busy running their business. They need to be lean so using me as their marketing department means that they utilise my skills when they most need help without the cost of hiring someone full-time."
Mr Michie offers marketing strategy, search engine optimisation, web design, social media management and email marketing.

He said: "I'm amazed how quickly my business has grown throughout the region and it's going from strength to strength.
"I've never been happier."

A top coach who helps partners of accountancy firms achieve freedom has published a book called The Highly Profitable Accountant.

Author Rudi Jansen, Head Coach at Accoa, shares some of his exclusive tips from his book which has more positive reviews than any others in the field.

Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6U8xhqqy7U

Link to extract from book: http://accoa.co.uk/25-profit-wasting-tasks-accountants-need-to-stop-doing/

Top Accountant’s coach pens book to help partners achieve business freedom

In The Highly Profitable Accountant, Rudi Jansen lays out a step-by-step guide where you will learn:

* The Profitable Practice Model that gives you at least 50%+ Net Profit
* How to build your A+ team so you can focus on growing your practice
* Master delegation with the Who-What-When Triangle
* Outsourcing and how to make it work for you
* Three simple systems to reduce your lock-up within 60 days
* How to get up to 16 referrals a week
* And much more!

A top coach, who specialises in helping managing partners of accountancy practices, has shared his secrets in a new book.

Internationally trained business coach Rudi Jansen, who qualified as a chartered accountant, wants to show practice owners how to reduce lock-up, make more time for themselves and increase their net profit percentage to at least 50%.
Mr Jansen runs successful coaching company Accoa which helps partners implement the right systems and processes that will help their practices grow exponentially.

His book, The Highly Profitable Accountant, promises to help accountants to “take control of their practice, make more money and get their life back.”

Mr Jansen, who hails from South Africa where he qualified as an accountant, said: “I went into accountancy to achieve my dream of freedom.

“By freedom I mean I wanted more time and money so I could excel in all areas of my life.”

But Mr Jansen quickly realised that he had very little time, of which he craved, as he was so engulfed in his accountancy work.

He said: “Money has a nasty habit. The more I made, the more I spent. And freedom still felt out of my reach.”
Mr Jansen decided to travel the world, to pursue his dream, and to learn from the best business coaches in different industries.

By doing this, he began to develop his own theoretical business model, which became the launching pad for Accoa.
Mr Jansen said: “I started Accoa to help business owners achieve business freedom.”
“As a result, I ended up coaching over 220 small-to-medium sized businesses and I helped them to flourish through implementing the core systems and processes a business needs to grow.”
His results were phenomenal and in 2012, Mr Jansen decided to focus his coaching company purely on helping accountancy practices.

“This meant that Accoa was perfectly aligned with my vast range of experience in both practice and commerce.”
Mr Jansen hopes to share his expertise with as many managing partners as possible, to help them achieve freedom from the day-to-day running of their practices.

In order to do this he is a regular speaker at high-profile events within the accountancy sector and runs his own series of free monthly training webinars.

Mr Jansen’s new book The Highly Profitable Accountant, demonstrates his tried and tested models which he has refined throughout his years coaching other accountancy practices.

The internet can be a mind field so it's important your business stands out from the crowd.

- Looking professional: the content you share online, on social media and on your website wants to look as professional as possible. So invest in making good quality video with great audio and well written content. Or better still, pay us to create that content for you.

- Regularity: set a timetable for your PR & Marketing and make sure it links in to what you're doing.

MasterChefs unite for a decadent pop-up restaurant in Wakefield

Two finalists from a TV cooking contest have joined together to pop-up a restaurant in West Yorkshire. Chris Hale and Katie Stabler from this year's BBC's MasterChef are preparing to treat the paying public with a decadence inspired menu.

Think seafood, Champagne, strawberries and hand-made chocolate truffles. Mr Hale from Sandal, who has launched Pop Up North since starting in the popular TV show, said:
"Our last pop-up was a sell-out success. We served up a taster menu of fresh pasta inspired dishes.
